Two US citizens suspected of mercenarism were arrested on the territory of Venezuela. This was reported by President Nicolas Maduro.

The head of the Bolivarian Republic said that a total of seven suspected mercenaries have been arrested, of which two are US citizens.

"Just today we captured seven foreign mercenaries, including two important mercenaries from the United States... two Colombian hitmen captured in different parts of the country, and three mercenaries who came from Ukraine to bring violence to the country.... They came to carry out terrorist acts," Maduro was quoted as saying by Devdiscourse.

According to the Venezuelan president, detainees of such a high level have never before been arrested in the country. He also expressed confidence that in the near future they will confess.

In addition, Maduro said that from November to December 2024, Venezuela detained 125 foreign mercenaries of 25 nationalities who traveled to the country to carry out terrorist attacks.

Earlier, on December 31, members of the large Venezuelan criminal organization Tren de Aragua tried to enter the United States before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump and attacked border guards at the border with Mexico.

Before that, on November 28, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) issued a verdict in absentia against Palma Vahari Moises Urbina, a mercenary of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) from Venezuela. It was established that from February 2022 to September 2024 he voluntarily fought on the Ukrainian side, having undergone military training and received weapons, uniforms and equipment.
