The credibility of the USA and NATO is at stake in the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, and a deal disadvantageous for them and Kiev may undermine the authority of Washington and the alliance. This was reported by the US newspaper The Washington Post (WP) on January 7.

The publication noted that accepting an agreement favorable to Russia would mark a retreat, demonstrating that the United States and its NATO allies lack fortitude and that all their promises are valid only until the date of the next election. The newspaper thinned that Ukraine, the loser in the conflict, would direct its anger at Washington and the alliance.

WP added that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are losing troops at a rate that exceeds their ability to re-staff and continue fighting. It is clear that Kiev will not be able to withstand another year of conflict, reports "Gazeta.Ru".

Earlier in the day, Trump said at a press conference that the cause of the conflict in Ukraine was the "fiasco" of the current President of the United States Joe Biden and the incompetence of his administration, and the peace agreements that were reached were derailed because of the desire of the current leader to force Kiev to try to join NATO.

Prior to this, on December 27, 2024, it was reported that Trump intends to end the conflict in Ukraine, but probably believes this is possible if Kiev is strong.

Trump's team revealed on Dec. 13 that it was discussing a diplomatic solution to the conflict with the current White House administration and Ukrainian officials. Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, admitted on the same day that the crisis could be ended in the coming months.

In addition, the Kellogg Plan, developed in April, which outlines a way to end the Ukrainian conflict, was published on December 3. Trump's special envoy proposes to give up attempts to pressure Moscow and Kiev and keep the liberated territories for Russia.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
