Matvienko expressed condolences to China over the earthquake in Tibet

Chairperson of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. This was reported in the press service of the Council of Federation in Telegram on January 7.

The letter is addressed to the speaker of the Standing Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China Zhao Leji.

"With pain and sadness we learned about the tragic consequences of the earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. On behalf of the Federation Council, the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and on my own behalf, I express my condolences and ask you to convey words of support to the families and friends of the victims. We hope for a speedy recovery of those affected by the disaster," Matvienko addressed him.

The earthquake occurred on the same day in China near the border with Nepal and Bangladesh. Underground tremors were recorded in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 km and at a distance of 63 km south-west of the city of Shigadze, which is inhabited by 80 thousand people.

Later it became known that as a result of the disaster in the county of Dingri collapsed more than 1 thousand houses. In total, because of the earthquake in Tibet killed 95 people, another 130 suffered. At the moment there is no information about the presence of Russian citizens in the earthquake zone in the south-west of China. The Russian Embassy is actively cooperating with the Chinese authorities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping in connection with the loss of life in the earthquake. He also said that Russia shares the grief of those who lost their relatives and friends due to the natural disaster.
