Fraudsters in Russia are deceiving elderly people by offering services on setting up set-top boxes. This was reported on January 7 by the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Property, Land and Property Relations, Sergei Gavrilov.

He specified that the attackers, masquerading as specialists in phone repair or equipment setup, demand exaggerated sums for their services.

"They come to the call: initially call one amount for services, but after the fact of work require a much higher payment. After receiving the money, they quickly leave, leaving the victim confused. Sometimes attackers use complex schemes, including pre-prepared documents and acts of completed work. This approach creates an illusion of legality in the victim," Gavrilov told RT.

In order not to become a victim of swindlers, the parliamentarian recommended pensioners not to let strangers into the house. In addition, it is important to check documents and directly contact the organization on behalf of which the "specialists" act, addedGazeta.Ru. The deputy also proposed to create a mandatory register for specialists in the adjustment of television equipment, smartphones and other equipment and machinery.

Earlier, on January 4, the head of the law enforcement center in Moscow and Moscow region, lawyer Alexander Khaminsky said that fraudsters are using a new scheme, which includes a fake invitation to allegedly participate in the jury panel. They write to citizens via e-mail or messengers, often attaching active links. When clicking through them, the attackers gain access to passwords for various applications, including banking passwords.
