Death toll in China's Tibet earthquake rises to 53 people

The death toll from the earthquake in Chinese Tibet has risen to 53 people, 62 more were injured. This was reported by Xinhua news agency on January 7 with reference to the operational headquarters for assistance to the victims.

"As of 12:30 (7:30 Moscow time - Ed.) on the 7th, 53 people were killed and 62 more were injured as a result of the earthquake in Tingri county of Shigadze city district," the operative headquarters said.

It is specified that the Tibet Autonomous Region has now launched a second-level response.

Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed to make every effort to carry out search and rescue operations, provide assistance to victims, minimize casualties, prevent secondary disasters, proper resettlement of victims and quality work to eliminate the consequences.

The earthquake occurred this day in China near the border with Nepal and Bangladesh. Underground tremors were recorded in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 km and at a distance of 63 km south-west of the city of Shigadze, which is inhabited by 80 thousand people.

Later it became known that as a result of the disaster in Dingri district collapsed more than 1 thousand houses. The Russian Embassy in Nepal said that at the moment there was no information about the injured Russian citizens.
