Canada's prime minister has promised to step down after a successor is chosen

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he will step down as chairman of the Liberal Party after a new leader is elected. The Associated Press (AP) reported on January 6.
"I intend to step down as party leader and prime minister after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationally competitive process," he said at a news conference.
Trudeau shared that he will not be able to "be the leader in the next election because of internal strife." He also said he "will not be able to be the best option" in the election. The Prime Minister emphasized that he is doing his job because the interests of Canadians and the well-being of democracy are dear to him.
He also added that he had asked the Liberal Party president the night before to begin the process of finding a new chair.
Earlier, on December 23, 2024, it was reported that more than a third of Liberal MPs in the Canadian Parliament said they wanted the country's prime minister to resign as party leader.
Prior to that, on December 16, Trudeau said that he did not intend to leave his post because of the changes in the Cabinet and the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. He specified that he wants to continue to make Canada better together with his colleagues in the party.
On the same day, it was reported that Trudeau was considering resigning over Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's decision to leave the government. Freeland said she would leave the cabinet on Dec. 16 because Trudeau decided to strip her of her portfolio as finance minister by moving her to another government job.
