Brazil announces Indonesia as a new full member of BRICS

The government of Brazil, which holds the 2025 chairmanship of the BRICS grouping, announced on January 6 that Indonesia has joined the grouping.

"The Brazilian government announced today, January 6, the official accession of the Republic of Indonesia to BRICS. The state of full member," reads the publication on the website of the Brazilian Cabinet.

It is specified that the countries of the bloc approved Indonesia's accession by consensus in accordance with the guidelines, criteria and procedures for membership expansion.

Brazil's BRICS presidency began on January 1 this year and will last until December 31.

Earlier, on January 2, Bolivian President Luis Arce said that after the state joined the BRICS grouping on January 1 this year, the country gained new opportunities to expand trade and diversify its economy. He added that integration with the association will give impetus to the development of such key sectors as energy, trade, manufacturing, technology and sustainable finance.

BRICS is an interstate association of countries. On the eve of the summit in Kazan, held from October 22 to 24, 2024, 35 applications were received to join the association. From January 1, 2025, in addition to Bolivia, Belarus, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan joined the BRICS as partners.
