Macron urged Ukraine to have realistic discussions on territorial issues

Ukraine should rely on the current realities in discussing territorial issues. This statement was made by French President Emmanuel Macron at a conference of French ambassadors in Paris on January 6.
"Ukrainians must have realistic discussions on territorial issues," he was quoted as saying by France 24 TV channel.
Macron noted that resolving the conflict "will not be quick and easy." He added that Europe should provide Kiev with security guarantees.
Earlier, on January 4, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Ukraine is unlikely to be able to return the territories that have already become part of Russia as a result of the referendum. According to him, Kiev will be forced to make a compromise not in its favor.
Before that, on December 21, 2024, the Sky News TV channel reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024, began to admit that he would not be able to return the territories militarily. He noted that the army does not have the forces to do so.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
