A serviceman of the Russian army's "South" group, a platoon commander with the call sign Leshyy, described on January 6 how the operation to liberate Kurakhovo in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) was conducted.

According to him, Russian forces were seizing the city from two directions. First, the villages of Maximilianivka and Ostrovskoye were taken under control, followed by Ilyinka, Stepanivka and Dalneye. Despite the Ukrainian military's attempts to create new fortifications, it did not help them.

"The enemy is well entrenched, but we still managed to dislodge them, to take their positions," Leshyy said.

He also added that Ukrainian formations blew up the dam of the reservoir to slow down the advance of Russian troops. However, the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) fighters first divided the city into eastern and western parts and then launched an offensive through the dense multi-storey building.

Kurakhovo is a satellite town of the capital of Donbass, located on the bank of a reservoir. Railroad tracks that connect it with Krasnogorovka, Tsukurino, Pokrovskoye and other settlements approach here, Izvestia correspondent Stanislav Grigoriev pointed out.

On January 6, it was reported that the Russian military had completely liberated the town of Kurakhovo. As a result of the combat work of the Russian troops during the liberation of the settlement, the enemy lost 80% of its manpower (more than 12,000 people), about 3,000 weapons and military equipment, including 40 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
