Berbock cited respect for women's rights as a condition for helping Syria

Germany will provide financial aid to Syria only on condition that the new government of the country respects the rights of women and minorities. This was stated by German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock on January 6 on the air of Tagesthemen.

She noted that after her visit to Syria she was surprised by the split in the country's society. She fears that freedom could disappear for the women of Syria. Therefore, the issue of women's rights was crucial. In her opinion, if they are trampled, no one will be free.

Earlier, on January 5, the new authorities in Syria "blurred" German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock in a photo in their social media publication after a meeting in Damascus. The interpreters accompanying Berbock were also blacked out in the image.

On January 4, representatives of Syria's new administration refused to shake hands with Annalena Berbock, who, along with her French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot, arrived on an unannounced visit to the Arab republic. In the footage published by the publication, it can be seen that Berbock is the first to descend the ramp of the government plane before approaching the delegation of the new Syrian administration. At the same time, both politicians from Syria put their hand to their hearts, making it clear that they are not going to shake hands with the head of the German Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, on January 3, it became known that Berbock and Barro went on an unannounced visit to Syria, where they were to meet with representatives of the new authorities in Damascus. In addition to holding talks, the ministers also intend to hold meetings with representatives of civil society in the Arab country. The German Foreign Ministry indicated that the trip is being made "on behalf of the European Union (EU)."

The situation in Syria has escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
