On January 6, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on the exploits of Russian army servicemen in the zone of the special military operation (SMO).

The ministry noted the work of Sergeant Ivan Kornilovskikh, who, commanding a squad of automatic grenade launchers, was tasked with providing fire support to an assault group on the line of contact. Upon arrival in the assigned area, he set up a firing point at a dominant height, after which the squad engaged in combat.

Ukrainian militants, restraining the actions of the assault groups of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, conducted machine gun fire, but Sergeant Kornilovskikh was able to suppress the position of the enemies and destroy it. Deprived of machine gun support, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) fighters attempted to bring reserves into the battle to hold back the Russian fighters' advance and also subjected them to FPV drone attacks. Despite being wounded, Sgt. Kornilovskikh was able to destroy two groups of fighters with shots from an automatic grenade launcher, forcing the enemy to abandon their positions.

The fighter's courage and determination and the professionalism of his subordinates ensured the advance of the Russian Armed Forces assault groups deep into the Ukrainian militants' defenses.

The Defense Ministry also spoke about the merits of Pavel Ustich, a radio-telephonist of the BARS-16 detachment, who performed the tasks of organizing communication between the forward positions and the detachment's command. As a result of mortar and artillery shelling by the AFU, part of the communication lines were damaged, and radio-telephonist Ustich went to repair the damage, risking his life. After repairing the broken communication lines, the fighter headed for cover, but was forced to engage a Ukrainian fighter. After the radiotelephone operator successfully reached his unit, the AFU was struck by an FPV drone.

The Defense Ministry noted the bravery and determination of the fighter, which allowed the Russian military to hold the occupied borders and repel the attack of Ukrainian militants.

Earlier, on January 5, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the UAV calculation hit the AFU's manpower and equipment in the Red Army direction of the North Caucasus Military District. The Defense Ministry specified that the UAV team was carrying out tasks to support the offensive actions of Russian attack aircraft. In the course of the task, FPV attack drones were used.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
