In Austria, a new chancellor will lead the government next week

In Austria, the new chancellor will take office next week. This was announced by the President of the country Alexander Van der Bellen.
"Next week I will appoint a new chancellor of the interim government. This will ensure good governance and the continued business of the Republic of Austria," Van der Bellen wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
He also noted that the new chancellor will serve until a new cabinet is formed.
In addition, it is reported that the general secretary of the ruling Austrian People's Party (ANP), Christian Stocker, announced his confirmation as acting head of the political association.
Prior to that, on January 4, Austrian Chancellor and head of the Austrian People's Party (ANP) Karl Nehammer said he would leave his posts after the failure of negotiations to form a ruling coalition following the results of parliamentary elections in September.
Earlier, on September 29, 2024, the Austrian Freedom Party (AFP), which opposes anti-Russian sanctions, won first place in the Austrian parliamentary elections after all ballots were processed. The party received 28.8% of the vote. The Austrian People's Party (APP) with 26.3% was in second place, and in third place- the Social Democratic Party of Austria, for which 21.1% of citizens who came to the polls voted.
On the same day, Karl Nehammer admitted the defeat of the party he led and said that he expects to remain the leader of the ANP and is not going to form a government with the leader of the Austrian Freedom Party (APS) Herbert Kickl. Christian Hafenecker, secretary general of the APS, in turn recommended that Nehammer resign.
