Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 5 that there were no plans for Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

The day before, German parliament member from the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Roderich Kiesewetter said Putin could meet with Scholz before the early Bundestag elections scheduled for February 23. Kiesewetter specified that Trump could also hold a meeting with the Russian leader in March.

"There are no such plans at the moment," Peskov told the TASS news agency when asked if these meetings were planned.

In mid-November last year, Putin and Scholz had their first telephone conversation in two years, which took place at the initiative of the German side. Peskov called the fact of the dialog positive. The talks were mainly devoted to Ukraine.

Then, on December 20, 2024, Scholz stated at a press conference his intention to continue talking with Putin. He made similar remarks on December 12. Der Spiegel magazine also wrote that Scholz might soon visit Moscow on a "peace mission," but the German government ruled out such a possibility.

Scholz later reiterated his desire to talk to the Russian leader again. According to the chancellor, he has already spoken to Trump twice and they agreed to closely coordinate positions on the topic of the Ukrainian conflict.
