In Transnistria, the military has started providing assistance to the republic's residents because of the energy crisis, which was caused by the cessation of gas transit from Russia and a widespread increase in prices. This was reported by the Telegram channel "Sputnik Moldova" on January 5.

"The Transnistrian Defense Ministry has handed over 74 units of equipment to civilian bodies for firewood procurement," the report said.

In addition, field kitchens were set up on the territory of Tiraspol, Grigoriopol and in Dubasari, where elderly and poor citizens could get hot meals.

On January 4, the government of the unrecognized DMR reported the beginning of fanning power cuts amid energy shortages in the region.

Earlier, on December 6 last year, an economic state of emergency was introduced in Transnistria due to the current difficult situation in the energy sector.

Before that, on November 22, Moldovan Energy Minister Victor Parlicov said that Transnistria could face energy difficulties from January 1 if Russia's Gazprom stops supplying gas.

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebryan said that a possible cessation of gas supplies to Transnistria by Russia after stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine would turn into a humanitarian catastrophe.

On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system.

In August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukraine.
