A ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft gun of the Dnipro group of troops has destroyed a Western-made reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) over the territory of Kherson Region. This was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on January 5.

While on duty, servicemen detected an enemy reconnaissance UAV of airplane type, which was approaching Russian positions to conduct aerial reconnaissance and adjust artillery fire. The calculation then opened aimed fire on the object from a 23-millimeter launcher, preventing the drone from accomplishing its task.

"In our direction, the enemy especially often uses kamikaze drones of either airplane or propeller type, as well as reconnaissance type with a large zoom and high accuracy of shooting, which transmit data in online mode. They are most often flown during the "gray" time of day: at dawn and close to dusk. Most often they are supported by artillery fire," said the commander of an anti-aircraft missile platoon with the call sign Filin.

Air defense units of the Russian paratroopers are on combat duty to cover units from enemy air attack and reconnaissance means around the clock.

"Around the clock, the duty means are in positions. After detection, since we are in the zone prohibited for flights, they have without report to open fire to kill," - specified the serviceman.

Earlier, on January 4, the Msta-B howitzer crew hit an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) control point and an AFU mortar position on the Konstantinovsky direction of the special operation. The strikes were carried out using fragmentation and high-explosive shells, as well as high-precision ammunition to inflict greater damage to the enemy at maximum distance.

The special operation to defend Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
