Over the next 15-20 years, eight Russian regions will be granted the status of nuclear power owners. This statement was made on January 4 by Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom.

"A total of eight new regions will acquire the status of nuclear power owning regions within the next 15-20 years," Likhachev said in an interview withRossiya 24 TV channel.

According to Likhachev, there is a very comfortable situation for business in the Murmansk region. In addition, Likhachev noted that Rosatom plans to start work on creating facilities in Khabarovsk Krai in the 2030s. One of the state corporation's tasks is to get the first nuclear kilowatt-hours at the Primorskaya NPP by 2032, Likhachev added.

"In the general scheme, we understand the task to get the first nuclear kilowatt-hours at the Primorsky NPP as early as 2032 - which is practically tomorrow by our standards - and to start creating capacities in Khabarovsk Krai in the 2030s. It is clear that these will be large units. And all this gives us the opportunity to talk about reaching the target of 25% in 2045, 2042," he said.

Earlier, on December 27, the president of the National Research Center (NRC) "Kurchatov Institute" Mikhail Kovalchuk said that Russia has created and is operating a fundamentally new small nuclear power plant necessary for the development of the Arctic. According to him, it is a self-regulating reactor, which is characterized by safety. Such a plant gives up to 1 MW of electricity and up to 14 MW of heat, which is the basis for the development of the Arctic, the Northern Sea Route and hard-to-reach remote areas, said the head of the Kurchatov Institute.

On December 24, Kovalchuk told Izvestia that Russia is the market leader in nuclear energy. He emphasized that the country is moving forward in this area and can only overtake competitors through new ideas.
