Protesters staged a rally in Seoul after a failed attempt by law enforcement agencies to arrest republican President Yun Seok-yeol. This was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian on January 4.

"Thousands of protesters gathered in the capital of South Korea the day after a failed attempt to arrest the country's suspended president Yun Seok-yol for introducing a short-term martial law decree that led to his impeachment," the newspaper said in its material.

It noted that protesters gathered in front of the residence and along Seoul's main roads. In addition, they are divided into those who are for and against Yoon Seok-yeol: part of the demonstrators demand his arrest, and part call to recognize the impeachment null and void.

The Guardian recognizes that South Korea has descended into political chaos. Yoon Seok-yol "defiantly locked himself in the presidential residence surrounded by hundreds of loyal security personnel" who are still resisting attempts by prosecutors to arrest him, the publication said.

The suspended president is facing criminal charges of sedition. According to the authors of the material, this means he could be sentenced to imprisonment or the death penalty.

"If the warrant is executed, Yoon will become the first arrested sitting President of South Korea", - writes the newspaper.

On the eve it became known that law enforcers arrived at the residence of the President of South Korea for his arrest. It is specified that in total about 150 law enforcement officers were sent - about 30 officers of the anti-corruption investigation department for high-ranking officials and 120 police officers. At the time, it was also reported that the President's security service did not allow the investigation to search his residence in Seoul.

Earlier, on Dec. 31, the court issued an arrest warrant for Yoon Seok-yeol. The president's lawyers said that the warrant for his arrest was invalid.

The situation in the Republic of Korea escalated in early December, when President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law. The reason for such a step he called the threat of paralysis of power, arising from attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. Commander of the emergency regime - Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn-soo noted that until the lifting of martial law in the republic prohibited the activities of the parliament, political parties and associations. Military equipment was brought to the streets of Seoul.

The National Assembly (Parliament) of South Korea officially voted to declare impeachment of President Yun Seok-yol on December 14. A total of 204 National Assembly members voted in favor of removing the president from office, while 85 voted against. The Constitutional Court has 180 days to issue a verdict from the time it receives the case.
