About 96 thousand tons of soil contaminated with fuel oil were removed from Kuban beaches

Almost 96 thousand tons of fuel oil contaminated soil, which was formed due to the wrecked tankers in the Kerch Strait, has been collected and removed from the beaches of Anapa and Temryuksky district. This was reported on Saturday, January 4, by the governor of the Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratiev.

"By common efforts from the beaches have already collected and removed almost 96 thousand tons of oiled soil, 10 thousand tons - for the last day. Almost 61 thousand tons have been brought to the site of temporary storage, the rest is now at four specialized enterprises <...> .There sand mixed with oil products is being utilized," he wrote in his Telegram-channel.

He also noted that he receives daily reports from his first deputy, head of the regional emergency response headquarters on the Black Sea coast Igor Galas.

Kondratiev added that despite the bad weather, volunteers, rescuers and administration staff continued to clean up contaminated soil all day Saturday. About 7,000 people and more than 500 pieces of equipment were involved.

As a result of the incident there was a spill of oil products. 27 people were evacuated from both vessels. It was specified that one person died. On the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a working group was set up to coordinate the work to eliminate the consequences of the accident.

Later on January 2, the press service of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation said that 2.4 thousand tons of oil products had fallen into the Black Sea after the crash of the tankers.

The next day, the city's governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said that in Sevastopol at the entrance to the Balaklava Bay found a fuel oil stain after the crash of the tankers. On January 4, he noted that the advance of fuel oil after the wreck is fixed to the north along the Crimean coast. He said that as part of the work of the operational headquarters will be organized "breakdown of the territory" to clean up traces of oil products. At the same time, Sevastopol declared an emergency situation regime (emergency situation) of regional character.
