Transnistria stopped lighting streets at night due to a shortage of energy. This was announced on January 4 by the Minister of Economic Development of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, Sergei Obolonik.

In a video message published by the First Transnistrian TV channel in Telegram, he spoke about the new schedule of street lighting.

Obolonik noted that on highways and emergency dangerous areas, streetlights will work until midnight.

"In other places, lighting will be from the moment of sunset, from 16:30 to 20:00 (17:30-21:00 Moscow time, - Ed.). This will save a fairly significant part of electricity, thereby either reducing the number of fan blackouts or reducing their duration," the minister said.

He added that the authorities plan to carry out a number of other measures to reduce the fan blackouts. Nevertheless, according to Obolonik, the region's energy system cannot cope with the load.

On the eve, the government of the unrecognized DMR reported the start of fan blackouts amid energy shortages in the region.

Earlier, on December 6, an economic state of emergency was introduced in Transnistria due to the current difficult situation in the energy sector.

Before that, on November 22, Moldovan Energy Minister Victor Parlicov said that Transnistria could face energy difficulties from January 1 if Russia's Gazprom stops supplying gas.

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebryan said that a possible cessation of gas supplies to Transnistria by Russia after stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine would turn into a humanitarian catastrophe.

On January 1, 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system.

In August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukraine.
