The expert told about the payment of sick leave during the New Year holidays

In the event that a working person falls ill during the New Year vacations, he or she may also issue a sick leave at a polyclinic, on which he or she will be paid the due payments. Professor Vadim Vinogradov, Doctor of Law, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, told about it on January 4.

A sheet of incapacity for work is paid even for holidays, since all working people are insured and the enterprise for the employee pays insurance premiums, the specialist explained.

"The employee <...> will be paid for all calendar days specified in the sheet of temporary disability. When calculating the amount of payment for sick leave, the average daily salary, the number of days of illness and the insurance length of service are taken into account," RT quoted the expert as saying.

The payment depends on the length of service of the employee - the longer he has worked, the greater the amount of sick leave he will receive. Thus, if the length of service is less than five years, the benefit will amount to 60% of average earnings, from five to eight years - 80%, with more than eight years of service - 100%. Usually only those periods of seniority in which insurance contributions were paid for the employee are taken into account. Average daily earnings are calculated based on the employee's income for two years prior to the date of onset of the disease, said Vinogradov.

Earlier, on December 27, the Russian Ministry of Labor proposed to launch in 2026 a three-year experiment to provide the self-employed with paid sick leave. Participation in the experiment will require them to pay insurance premiums. The self-employed will be able to receive paid sick leave six months after the start of these payments. According to the proposed scheme, will be available to choose the amount of insurance coverage - Br35 thousand or Br50 thousand, and the monthly insurance premium will be Br1,344 or Br1,920.

Also on December 6, it became known that the Ministry of Health plans to change the order of formation of sick leave from September 1, 2025. The draft of the updated regulations provides for the accounting of certificates of incapacity for work issued to an individual citizen for the detection and prevention of serious diseases.
