The year 2025 could be a breakthrough in the creation of a vaccine against cancer. This was reported by the British newspaper The Economist on January 4 with reference to scientists.

Vaccines against oncology have finally shown their effectiveness, trials are being conducted against tumors of the skin, brain and lungs, the newspaper writes.

"It is hoped that cancer vaccines will progress to the point where they reduce the need for more invasive treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery," the paper says.

The Economist writes about the observation of New York surgeon William Colley, who in the late 19th century began using a vaccine based on killed bacteria to treat inoperable patients. He believed that infection could make the immune system fight cancer.

"The idea, controversial in his lifetime, was not widely recognized among scientists until the 1950s. Today, it is spurring efforts to create a new generation of treatments, known as 'cancer vaccines,' that aim to train the immune system to recognize tumors and fight their spread," the article said.

Earlier, on December 17, Andrey Kaprin, chief freelance oncologist at the Russian Health Ministry, announced the beginning of the selection of candidates for participation in clinical trials of the oncovaccine being developed in Russia.

On December 16, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said that there is a request for Russian oncovaccine from other countries. He added that Russia will start using the vaccines in clinical units next year.On December 14, Kaprin said that the cancer vaccine will be free for all Russian citizens. In addition, he noted that the oncovaccine has shown high efficacy in preclinical trials.

On November 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the introduction of a cancer vaccine a breakthrough. At the meeting with the Russian leader, the head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), Veronika Skvortsova, told him about the agency's innovative developments in the field of biotechnology, including oncovaccines.
