The royal coat of arms of Denmark has been updated, removing from it three crowns, depicted since the Kalmar Union. This was reported on January 1 on the website of the Danish royal house.

"By making changes to the royal coat of arms made in 1972, the king wishes to create a modern royal coat of arms that both reflects the Commonwealth and takes into account history and heraldic traditions," the statement said.

It is noted that the three crowns have been removed as they are "no longer relevant". In addition, the cross of Dannebrogue has been replaced with a curved cross.

The new version of the coat of arms was established by royal proclamation on December 20, 2024. The king determined the changes based on the recommendation of a committee that was set up immediately after the change of throne.

"The graphic design of the new royal coat of arms emphasizes that the royal coat of arms continues to have a strict and dignified expression," the royal house added.

Frederick X was proclaimed the new King of Denmark on January 14, 2024, following the abdication of Queen Margrethe II. Prior to that, on December 31, 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced in her traditional New Year's Eve speech that she would abdicate and pass the title to her son. She signed the abdication at a state council meeting at the royal castle of Christiansborg.
