Montenegro reported a voluntary collection of illegal weapons


Montenegro will hold a campaign "Save your life - surrender your weapons", thanks to which all illegal weapons of the population will be voluntarily collected. This was announced by the Prime Minister of the country Milojko Spajic on January 3.
"As far as illegal weapons are concerned, we already have a campaign 'Take Life - Surrender Weapons'. This campaign will be limited to two months. If people who own illegal weapons do not turn them in in the coming two months, they will be severely punished," RTCG portal quoted him as saying.
The Prime Minister also added that every gun owner will be required to undergo an additional check by January 1, 2026. In case this is not done, the person will be obliged to surrender the weapon and pay a fine.
Spajic also specified that the previous laws, which were supported by the state's history and traditions, will be completely revised. According to him, this will prevent possible tragedies in the future.
In addition, the Prime Minister said that after the expiration of the campaign for the surrender of illegal weapons, the police will start checking the homes of citizens. Additional specialists will be recruited to the police for this purpose. Spajic said that 200 new people have already been drafted into the law enforcement agencies. He also announced the creation of a new unit aimed at combating the possession of illegal weapons.
Earlier, on January 2, it was reported that Milojko Spajic will hold an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council, which will consider, among other things, an initiative to hold events in the country to seize weapons from the population.
On the evening of January 1, in the Montenegrin town of Cetinje, a man opened fire on people in a catering establishment. According to the latest information, 12 people were killed, among them two children. Later, the country's Interior Ministry reported that the suspect died during transportation to the hospital.
The country declared three days of mourning after the shooting in Cetinje. Montenegro's Prime Minister also admitted considering a ban on gun ownership in connection with the incident.
