On January 4, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on the exploits of Russian servicemen in the zone of the special military operation (SMO).

The ministry noted the actions of Captain Sergei Bunk, who commanded a unit holding the defense against superior enemy forces. The serviceman led his unit in the most difficult combat areas. The Russian fighters repelled the attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) fighters for several days and prevented the breakthrough of their positions, while inflicting significant damage to the enemy. Thanks to the courage of Bunk and his subordinates, it was possible to preserve an important area and force the AFU fighters to retreat.

The Defense Ministry also spoke about the merits of Lieutenant Maxim Kondaurov, who as part of a motorized rifle group performed a combat mission to liberate a populated area from Ukrainian militants.

In the course of the task, Kondaurov found a camouflaged enemy stronghold, assessed the situation and stealthily sneaked into it from the flank. After that, the serviceman broke into the stronghold and destroyed the AFU fighters who were there, thus enabling a detachment of Russian motorized riflemen to gain a foothold in the territory and take control of the enemy's territory.

Earlier, on January 3, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of Stavropol paratroopers detected and destroyed an AFU heavy drone of the "Baba Yaga" type in the Zaporozhye region. The enemy drone was spotted during aerial reconnaissance. Having assessed the situation, the UAV operator decided to attack the enemy drone.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
