The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has been diagnosed with a severe form of pneumonia. This was reported by the DPA agency on January 3.

In this regard, all her planned trips for the next two weeks have been canceled.

"If all goes well, [the EC chief] will fully recover by the middle of the month," a commission spokesman said.

Von der Leyen will then return to work in her office at the commission building in Brussels, now running "official errands" from Hannover.

Pneumonia is an inflammation of lung tissue that is most often caused by bacteria. The most common are pneumococcus, staphylococcus, chlamydia and mycoplasma.

In October last year, pediatrician Maryam Sayfulina told Izvestia that pneumonia is transmitted by airborne droplets. According to her, the risks of the disease are weakened immunity and poor air quality. She warned that pneumonia can cause many complications and even lead to death.
