TheUnited States has begun construction of a new military base in the town of Kobani, located in northern Syria near the Turkish border, controlled by the Kurdish "Forces of Democratic Syria" (FDS). This was reported by The War Zone portal on January 2.

It is reported that a convoy of 50 trucks carrying cement blocks, surveillance cameras, fuel tanks and equipment for creating trenches has arrived in the region.

Additional forces are also expected to be sent: military personnel, armored vehicles, weapons, radars and air defense systems. The work has already begun, and the site itself will become a base for the International Coalition troops, the portal writes.

Previously, the U.S. already had a military base in Kobani, it was located on the territory of the abandoned cement plant Lafarge in northern Syria, actively used to support special operations. There were landing pads for helicopters and all the necessary infrastructure.

However, after the US military contingent was withdrawn from its territory, the US launched airstrikes on it to destroy the remaining equipment.

According to The War Zone, it is still unclear whether this is the same facility that the US is now trying to rebuild.

Earlier, on December 11, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, responding to Izvestia's question during a briefing, said that the U.S. was purposefully imposing sanctions on Syria to maintain influence over the country, which caused the population's dissatisfaction with the socio-economic state of affairs.

Prior to that, on December 8, the Arab League (LAS) called to lift sanctions on Syria and support its people. On December 19, UN Secretary General António Guterres allowed the lifting of restrictions on Syria. He noted that the sanctions imposed were directed against the regime of the country's former president Bashar al-Assad, but now the situation has changed.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on December 8 that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with the opposition, left the post of head of state and left the country, instructing to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. On the same day, the national coalition of revolutionary and opposition forces of Syria announced the work on the formation of a transitional authority. In turn, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that most of the ministers of the Syrian government remain in Damascus, and he himself is ready to cooperate with any elected leadership.

The situation in Syria has escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation against the militants.
