- Nebenzya ruled out permanent membership of Germany and Japan in the UN Security Council

Germany and Japan will never get a seat as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This was stated by Russia's permanent representative to the organization Vasily Nebenzya on 3 January.
He recalled that a new season of negotiations between the countries on the UN Security Council reform will start in January. Nebenzya added that many proposals are rather naive and impractical.
"There are countries that claim for a seat in the Security Council that they will never get <...> In particular, Germany and Japan," the diplomat said on air of the Rossiya-24 TV channel.
He emphasized that the impossibility of these countries to become a member of the UN Security Council is obvious.
Back in 2023, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that permanent membership of Germany and Japan in the UN Security Council was out of the question. According to him, neither Germany nor Japan as "obedient executors of Washington's will, like virtually all other Western countries," will add anything new to the discussions in the Security Council.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also called the ambitions of Germany and Japan for membership in the UN Security Council groundless. She emphasized that Moscow is in favor of making the UNSC "more representative" at the expense of developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, which rightly have the right to claim a more significant role in global affairs.
The UN Security Council is one of the organization's five main bodies. Its permanent members include Britain, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. At the same time, 10 non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms.
