The world's largest hydro-storage power plant (HSPP) Fengning has started full operation in the city of Chengde in northern China. The Global Times reported.

"The station has a total installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts and is designed to generate 6.61 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year," the material said.

It is specified that GAES is a leading renewable energy storage technology and plays a key role in promoting the country's transition to green energy.

"The Fengning power plant is expected to save 480,800 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 million tons per year, making a significant contribution to the country's energy efficiency and environmental sustainability goals, the company said," the paper reported.

Prior to this, China Three Gorges Renewables Group, which is the operator of the plant, announced plans to build a uniquely efficient 8GW solar power plant. Construction is due to begin this September and be completed in 2027,Gazeta.Ruadded.

Last October, a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed that the world is on the verge of a "new era of electricity" in which demand for fossil fuels is expected to peak by the end of this decade, and an oversupply of oil and gas on the market could lead to increased investment in green energy.
