Due to incessant rains, rivers in western Lithuania overflowed, causing floods. As Kretinga District Administration Director Vilma Preibene said on Friday, January 3, an extreme situation has been declared in several municipalities because of what happened.

"We have declared an extreme situation in some starostvos (Administrative unit. - Ed.) of Kretinga district - Žalgiris, Carter, Salanta and in the town of Kretinga. A number of streets in the district center were flooded," Lithuanian Radio and Television(LRT) quoted her as saying.

The official pointed out that there are also farmsteads in rural areas that have been flooded and cut off from the world. However, the situation does not threaten people's lives, and no evacuation measures have been announced yet. In the municipality of Kretinga district, the water level is already falling. The most difficult situation is in the town of Cartena and one of the settlements of gardeners.

It is noted that over the past 24 hours the water level in the rivers rose by an average of 192 cm. Rescue services have been put on high alert.

Earlier, on December 27, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia Alexander Kurenkov noted that in 2025 the risks of flooding may arise in Kurgan, Tyumen and Murmansk regions. He added that the agency has already started preparations for the flood-dangerous period, despite the fact that the expected forecast of spring floods will appear only in February.
