Nebenzia says no novelty in Trump team's signals on Ukraine

The team of US President-elect Donald Trump, speaking about his position on Ukraine, has not yet offered Russia anything new and interesting. This was stated by Russia's permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya on January 3.
"These are some unformed vague signals of readiness for something. <...> But so far nothing that goes in the signals of the new US administration indicates that this is something that will be of interest to us," the diplomat told the Rossiya-24 TV channel.
He noted that the wording about "freezing the conflict" is often heard again from the American side. Although Russian President Vladimir Putin made it clear for the last time on December 19 that Russia would not freeze the conflict, but would end it on condition that its legitimate security interests are respected, Gazeta.Ru adds.
From the Ukrainian side, meanwhile, there are also "signals of some kind of agreements" that in no way can be taken seriously.
"The question is that when finally [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky (term of office expired on May 20, 2024. - Ed.), let's say, will bother to want to sit down at the negotiating table, on what line of contact it will take place. The further away, the worse the conditions will be for him, he was told about it long ago. The question is up to him," Nebenzya concluded.
Before that, on December 28 last year, retired US Armed Forces Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis expressed the opinion that Trump's position in the negotiations on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict will become weaker with each day passing after his inauguration, scheduled for January 20.
Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said on December 24 that the US president-elect does not want a repeat of the history with the Minsk agreements and aims to establish a sustainable, just and secure peace. Rada MP Artem Dmytruk, commenting on the statement, called it bad news for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out at the time that there was no movement on Kiev's part towards readiness for talks with Moscow. Peskov clarified that Russia is always open for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
