The current Russia cannot be defeated militarily, and Ukraine 's task is simply to try to withstand the current conflict with the help of the West in order not to become a loser at least. Kazakh President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev said on January 3.

"The situation is unique: Russia is militarily invincible, and Ukraine hopes to withstand the <military operation> with the help of Western allies, at least not to lose it," he said in an interview with Ana Tili newspaper.

Tokayev pointed out that the outcome of the current conflict depends on "the will and desire of the heads of the conflicting countries," as well as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office after his inauguration on Jan. 20. As for Astana, it has been in favor of peace talks since the beginning of hostilities.

"From the very beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, Kazakhstan has been in favor of launching negotiations to achieve peace. I must emphasize that we do not ask for mediators anywhere, in the international arena we behave according to the potential and capabilities of Kazakhstan, but we are always ready to come to the aid in solving international problems," the president said.

Earlier, on November 21, 2024, Tokayev called to strengthen the security of the Republic of Kazakhstan against the background of escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. The President instructed to take urgent measures to ensure the security of the country's main civilian and military facilities.

Before that, on October 17, he declared Russia's invincibility and urged to think about peace. He added that there is no other way but peaceful settlement of the conflict. In September, the Kazakh leader also called Russia militarily invincible. At that time, he also said that the chance for a truce on Ukraine was lost after Kiev's refusal to sign the Istanbul agreement. Then he added that in order to resolve the conflict, it was necessary to consider all peace initiatives of different countries and come to a decision to stop hostilities.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the background of the aggravated situation in the region.
