Germany urged to launch JV after gas transit through Ukraine halted

The German authorities should stop making "monetary gifts" to Kiev after the termination of gas transit through Ukraine and organize the launch of Nord Stream. This was stated on January 2 by Sevim Dagdelen, a member of the German Parliament from the party "Union of Sarah Wagenknecht - for Reason and Justice" (SSV).
"Put Nord Stream into operation at last! Stop the monetary gifts to Kiev!" - she wrote on her X (former Twitter) page.
Dagdelen noted that Ukraine continues to raise energy prices, halting the transit of Russian gas to Europe, while the EU and German authorities in particular are quietly watching.
Earlier in the day, Bloomberg reported that gas prices in European countries on the first trading day of the year showed the maximum since 2023 amid the cessation of supplies from Russia.
Before that, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the cessation of gas supplies from Russia through Ukraine weakens the economic potential of the EU. The diplomat stressed that the Russian side had fulfilled all its obligations under the contract with Naftohaz Ukrayiny.
In his turn, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Artem Dmytruk, said that Ukraine would face big problems after its decision to refuse to transit Russian gas through its territory. He pointed out that Ukraine would lose revenues from transit, which previously amounted to $800m per year.
Russian energy company Gazprom said it had suspended gas supplies through Ukraine since 8:00 Moscow time on January 1. At that moment, the agreement of December 30, 2019 with Naftogaz of Ukraine on gas transit through Ukrainian territory, as well as between Gazprom and the Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine LLC, expired.
In August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his powers expired in May that year) said that Ukraine would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukraine.
