A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Chilean city of Antofagasta

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 has occurred in the city of Antofagast, Chile. This was reported on January 2 by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center(EMSC).

The population of Antofagast is 362 thousand people. Seismic activity occurred 198 km to the south-east from the city of Iquique with a population of 227 thousand people and 85 km to the north-west from the city of Calama with a population of 143 thousand people. The origin of the earthquake was located at a depth of 99 km.

Earlier on the same day it became known that the earthquake with magnitude 4.7 was registered near Cobb, California, USA. The origin of the earthquake was located at a depth of 1.1 km.
