Two new sites of oil product pollution discovered in Crimea

Two more sites of oil product pollution have been discovered in Crimea after an accident with tankers in the Kerch Strait. This is reported on January 2 by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.

"In Kerch, in the area of the city beach, revealed minor pollution for 1.8 km. In the Leninsky district near Lake Tobechik - 2.1 km", - stated in the Telegram-channel of the Department.

Specialists are already working on cleaning the zone, soil removal has been organized. About 150 people and 48 units of equipment are involved in the work.

January 1, the Ministry of Emergency Situations indicated that employees of the department and volunteers collected more than 71.3 thousand tons of contaminated sand and soil from the coast of the Kuban. Rescuers surveyed 56 square kilometers of coastline from the water. The collection and removal of fuel oil-contaminated soil on the 63rd km section of the coast is underway.

Earlier, on December 30 last year, the head of the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar region Igor Galala said that the main work on cleaning the Kuban coast from fuel oil can be completed in a week in the absence of new emissions.

Tankers Volgoneft-212 andVolgoneft-239crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15 due to bad weather. As a result of the incident there was a spill of oil products. 27 people were evacuated from both vessels. It was specified that one person died. On the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a working group has been created to coordinate work to eliminate the consequences of the accident.

In the Krasnodar region since December 26, the emergency regime of the federal level has been in force, and in Crimea since December 28, the emergency regime of regional character has been declared. To eliminate the consequences of the oil spill, a safe sorbent was delivered to the Kuban, as well as a unit for pumping oil products from sunken tankers.
