On January 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated People's Artist of the USSR, choreographer of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia Yuri Grigorovich on his birthday. The head of state called him the pride of Russian ballet.

"Dear Yuri Nikolayevich, please accept warm congratulations on your birthday. You are rightly considered the pride of Russian ballet, a man who personifies an entire era in the history of Russian and world choreography," the president said in a congratulatory message published on the Kremlin website.

Putin wished Grigorovich health and well-being, and also congratulated him on New Year holidays.

Yuri Grigorovich was born in 1927 in Leningrad. He was a pupil of Boris Shavrov and Alexei Pisarev. In 1961 he became choreographer of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater, and in 1964 he was invited to the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

The choreographer's productions have been performed on the Moscow stage over 3,000 times, the record-breaker being The Nutcracker. The choreographer has been invited to stage productions in 20 countries around the world.
