The power of the magnetic storm on Earth has increased to the G4 level, which is classified as "very strong". This was reported on January 1 by the Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics in a conversation with TASS.

The G4 level is the second strongest on a scale of five indicators and implies that the Earth may record serious disruptions of radio communications, multi-hour disruptions of satellite and radio-frequency navigation. In addition, polar auroras may be recorded even in the tropics.

Earlier on the same day, leading expert of the weather center "Phobos" Mikhail Leus reported the beginning of a weak magnetic storm on Earth. As the expert noted, because of this, residents of some regions of Russia, namely Leningrad, Pskov, Tver, Novgorod regions and Karelia, could observe the aurora borealis.
