FBI confirms death of truck driver who ran over a crowd of people in New Orleans

The driver of the truck that ran over a crowd of people in New Orleans is dead. This was reported on January 1 by NBC News TV channel with reference to the FBI statement.

"This morning a man directed a vehicle into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. <...> The suspect had a standoff with local law enforcement and is dead. The FBI <...> is working with partners to look into the details of this act of terrorism," the agency said in a statement.

According to the city's police, 10 deaths are still known at this time. The number of people injured in the incident has risen to 35. According to preliminary information, most of the victims are locals, not tourists.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told TASS that Russians, tentatively, were not injured in the collision in New Orleans.

The collision of a truck with a crowd of people in New Orleans became known earlier in the day. The media specified that then the driver got out and started shooting, and law enforcement opened fire back.

Before that, it was reported about at least 10 dead and 30 injured as a result of the incident. According to the FBI, two police officers were wounded in the shooting and explosive devices were found at the scene of the tragedy. The mayor of New Orleans called what happened a terrorist attack.
