Putin instructed to prepare a single line of textbooks on Russian language and literature

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed to prepare a single line of school textbooks on Russian language and literature by June 1, 2026. The list of instructions is published on the Kremlin website following a meeting of the Council on the implementation of state policy in the sphere of support for the Russian language and languages of the peoples of Russia.

"To ensure the creation of a single state line of school textbooks on the Russian language, literature and literary reading for use in the implementation of educational programs of primary general, basic general and secondary general education, providing for the creation of a set of educational aids (educational dictionaries of the Russian language)," - stated in the text.

Implementation of the order with the involvement of leading universities and other interested organizations will be taken up by the Government of the Russian Federation and the Council on State Policy in the field of language support.

The Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and the Chairman of the Language Council, Presidential Advisor Elena Yampolskaya have been appointed responsible for its implementation until June 1, 2026.

The Ministry of Education is also instructed to provide for the inclusion of patriotic literature by modern writers in the lists of recommended works for extracurricular reading until June 1, 2025, and to consider the creation of a single state line of school textbooks on the state languages of the republics of the Russian Federation until October 1.

Earlier, on November 5, the first meeting of the Council for the Support of the Russian Language and Other Languages of the Peoples of Russia, created in August, was held. At the meeting, Putin agreed with the experts who propose to create unified state textbooks on the Russian language and state languages of the subjects of the Russian Federation.

The head of state called the Russian language one of the fundamental values, and also pointed out that support for the Russian language and languages of the peoples of Russia is among the key priorities of the country.

For her part, Yampolskaya told Izvestia that language policy is inseparable from education, enlightenment, national policy and geopolitics.
