Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Russian chess player Yan Nepomnyashchy on his victory at the World Blitz Championship in New York. This was reported by the Kremlin press service on Wednesday, January 1.
"I congratulate you on your brilliant performance in New York. You passed the entire competitive distance to perfection, and in the final you showed great restraint and a firm determination to win. You deservedly became world champion, sharing this honorable title with the experienced Magnus Carlsen. Well done!" - said in a congratulatory message published on the website.
Earlier in the day it became known that the first place at the World Blitz Championship was shared by Jan Nepomnyashchy and his rival from Norway Magnus Carlsen. In the final match Nepomnyashchy and Carlsen won two games each, and in the additional games there were draws. The Norwegian chess player offered his rival to share the first place of the tournament.
