More than 71 thousand tons of contaminated soil were collected from the Kuban coastline

Employees of the Russian Emergencies Ministry and volunteers have collected more than 71.3 thousand tons of contaminated sand and soil from the Kuban coast. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry on Wednesday, January 1.

Rescuers surveyed 56 square kilometers of coastline from the water. Collection and removal of fuel oil-contaminated soil on the 63 km section of the coast is underway.

"In total, since the beginning of work by employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, representatives of municipalities of the Krasnodar region, volunteers, collected and removed from the beach territory of almost 71,383 tons of contaminated sand and soil", - stated in the message of the Department.

Divers checked tankers "Volganeft-212" and "Volganeft-239", no leaks were found.

No new oil product pollution has been detected in Crimea over the past 24 hours. 96 people and 41 units of equipment were involved. Since the beginning of the work surveyed 1.3 thousand km of coastline, collected and removed more than 226 tons of contaminated sand and soil, as well as cleaned more than 44 km of coast.

Earlier, on December 30, the head of the operational headquarters of the Krasnodar region Igor Galala said that the main work on cleaning the coast of the Kuban from fuel oil can be completed in a week in the absence of new emissions.

Tankers Volgoneft-212 andVolgoneft-239crashed in the Kerch Strait on December 15 due to bad weather. As a result of the incident there was a spill of oil products. 27 people were evacuated from both vessels. It was specified that one person died. On the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a working group has been created to coordinate work to eliminate the consequences of the accident.

In the Krasnodar region since December 26, the emergency regime of the federal level has been in force, and in Crimea since December 28, the emergency regime of regional character has been declared. To eliminate the consequences of the oil spill, a safe sorbent was delivered to the Kuban, as well as a unit for pumping oil products from sunken tankers.
