Russian energy company Gazprom on Wednesday, January 1, announced the suspension of gas supplies through Ukraine.

On January 1, 2025 at 8:00 Moscow time, the agreement of December 30, 2019 between Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy on gas transit through Ukraine, as well as between Gazprom and the Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine LLC expired at 8:00 Moscow time.

"Due to the repeated and explicit refusal of the Ukrainian side to extend these agreements, Gazprom was deprived of the technical and legal possibility to supply gas for transit through Ukraine from January 1, 2025. Since 8:00 Moscow time, the supply of Russian gas for its transportation through the territory of Ukraine is not carried out," the energy company said in a statement in its Telegram channel.

In late August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term expired in May) said that the country would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin later said that Russia was not giving up gas transit through Ukraine.

Later, on December 20, it was reported that Zelensky said that he agreed to transit Russian gas through Ukraine if Western countries do not pay Russia for the fuel until the conflict ends.

The day before, it was reported that the request for Russian gas transit through Ukraine for January 1 had dropped to zero.
