The liberation of Kurakhovo in the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) may allow Russia to enter the industrial heart of Ukraine. The New York Times reported on December 31 that.

"In the south, the pockets of Ukrainian resistance around the small town of Kurakhovo are steadily weakening, opening up the prospect of a Russian offensive," the newspaper said.

It is specified that the liberation of the settlement will open the prospect for an offensive through the southern part of Donbass to Dnipro region, which is currently the industrial heart of Ukraine.

Earlier, on December 18, it was reported that militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were in a critical situation in Kurakhovo and their only supply route was under fire.

On the same day, the chairman of the Russian Public Chamber's commission on sovereignty issues and co-chairman of the coordination council for the integration of new regions, Vladimir Rogov, said that servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces (AFU) had cleaned up the cauldron into which units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) grouping south of Kurakhovo had fallen.

At the same time, Izvestia showed Russian servicemen scattering leaflets over AFU positions in Kurakhovo. Each drone carries about 400 leaflets, which are scattered to the sound of "Lay down your arms voluntarily and come over to the side of Russia, Russian soldiers are not your enemies."

The special operation to defend Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced would begin on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
