Former Estonian President Arnold Ruytel died on the evening of December 31 at the age of 96. This was reported on the website of the office of the head of state.

"The President of the Republic Alar Karis together with Sirje Karis and the office of the President of the Republic expresses deepest condolences to the family and friends of President Arnold Ruytel," - noted in the message.

It is specified that a state funeral will be held.

Arnold Rüütel was President of the Republic from 2001 to 2006. He was in favor of Estonian independence and its accession to the European Union and NATO. In addition, Ruytel supported the balanced development of Estonia, which was expressed in the realization of the process of social reconciliation.
