Genealogical site MyHeritage will delete the accounts of Russians in February

Genealogical website MyHeritage has sent out notices to Russian users that their accounts will soon be completely deleted.

"The account and all information contained in it will be deleted on February 1, 2025," reads the text of such notices, which is quoted by RIA Novosti on December 31.

It also specifies that users can export their data until the specified date.

What is the reason and what alternative paths are available to domestic developers

In 2020, Duma deputy Evgeny Fedorov asked the Prosecutor General's Office to check the MyHeritage portal for the legality of collecting DNA data of Russian citizens. After that, in January 2022 and October 2023, the service was fined 1.5 million rubles and 6 million rubles respectively for refusing to localize personal data of Russians.
