China denied involvement in cyberattack on U.S. Treasury Department

Beijing has always opposed any form of hacking attacks, as well as the spread of false information against China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Dec. 31 regarding the alleged cyberattack on the U.S. Treasury Department.
"Beijing has always opposed all forms of hacking attacks, and we are even more opposed to spreading false information against China for political purposes. We have repeatedly stated our stance against such baseless accusations that lack evidence," the South China Morning Post reports the ministry's statement.
It is specified that the U.S. Treasury Department characterized the intrusion as a "major cybersecurity incident" because it was attributed to a state-sponsored entity.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that hackers linked to China allegedly attacked the US Treasury Department's electronic systems. The New York Times publication indicated that the Treasury Department was alerted to the attack by BeyondTrust. The hacker could gain access to remote workstations of the Ministry of Finance and documents stored there. According to the ministry, it cooperated with the FBI in the investigation of the attack.
