2024 in Moscow became the warmest year in 245 years of weather observations
The year 2024 has become the warmest in the 245-year history of meteorological observations in Moscow. This was reported to journalists in the press service of Moscow State University on December 31.
"According to the Meteorological Observatory of Moscow State University, 2024 became the warmest year in the entire 245-year history of meteorological observations in Moscow: the average annual air temperature reached an absolute record of 8.2 degrees," - the words of the press service "RIA Novosti".
Thus, only two months - January and May - were very cold. The other ten months of the outgoing year turned out to be much warmer than their usual values, MSU added.
The MSU Meteorological Observatory called September particularly warm, as the average temperature in this month amounted to +17.9 degrees, which is 5.7 degrees above the norm. September 2024 was the hottest September in the history of meteorological observations and broke the record set 180 years ago.
In addition, September this year was a record sunny September: the duration of sunshine reached 263 hours this month. The agency noted that it also turned out to be almost record dry: the amount of precipitation amounted to only 9.6 mm.
The MSU also said that the dangerous phenomenon of abnormally cold weather was observed in 2024 only once: from January 2 to 8. The dangerous phenomenon of severe frost, that is -30 degrees, has not been observed in Moscow for 19 years.
According to the press service, the hottest air temperature in 2024 was in Moscow on July 4, reaching +33.1 degrees, and the lowest temperature on January 4 - -24.9 degrees.
Earlier in the day, leading expert of the weather center "Phobos" Miakhil Leus said that the weather in the capital on December 31 is formed by a cold atmospheric front, and the most noticeable precipitation - snow - will last until 16:00 Moscow time, after which they will weaken and reduce.
