- Russian chess player Dubov overslept a game of the World Blitz Championship in the USA

Russian chess player and grandmaster Daniil Dubov told in an interview on Tuesday, December 31, about how he overslept the World Blitz Championship game against his American counterpart Hans Niemann.
"What happened, happened. I went to the hotel, then came back and reported that I overslept. What else am I supposed to say? Unless you are an idiot, when something like this happens, you realize what happened," the athlete said.
He added that the reason for the incident was jetlag after a long flight to the United States.
Dubov was awarded a technical defeat in the match.
The Russian chess player's opponent said after the incident that he would be happy to play with Dubov under any conditions.
"I would be happy to play with Dubov in a blitz match under any conditions. I will pay for the trip, accommodation and offer a $10k reward to the charity organization he chooses," Niemann wrote on his X page (former Twitter).
Earlier, on December 28, it was reported that Russian chess player Jan Nepomnyashchy was fined $200 because of inappropriate dress code at the World Blitz and Rapid Championships, which was held in New York.
