Hackers linked to China allegedly attacked the electronic systems of the U.S. Treasury Department. This was reported by The New York Times on December 30 with reference to the agency's letter to the U.S. Congress.

"Based on the available indicators, the incident was attributed to the Chinese-sponsored organization Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) <...> In accordance with the policy of the Ministry of Finance intrusions associated with APT are considered a serious incident in the field of cybersecurity," - the text of the letter.

The publication points out that the Ministry of Finance was alerted to the attack by BeyondTrust. The hacker was able to gain access to remote workstations of the Ministry of Finance and documents stored there. According to the ministry, it cooperated with the FBI in the investigation of the attack.

The details of the attack were not specified, but according to the letter, the U.S. Treasury Department plans to disclose more information in an upcoming report to Congress.

Earlier on December 18, China-based router maker TP-Link was suspected of cyberattacks. As The Wall Street Journal reported, the U.S. is thinking of introducing a ban on the use of these devices from 2025. Commenting on the situation, Liu Pengyu, a representative of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., said that the United States was using the appearance of national security to "suppress Chinese companies.
