Ukraine to quadruple gas pumping tariff in 2025

Gas transportation tariffs for Ukrainians will increase by 305% from January 1, 2025. This was reported by the UNIAN news agency on Monday, December 30.
"From January 1, 2025 tariffs for gas transportation for domestic consumers will increase four times. The increase is due to the fact that due to the cessation of Russian gas transit, the income of the operator of the GTS of Ukraine significantly decreases. The decision was made on December 30 at a public meeting of the NKREKU (National Energy Regulatory Commission - Ed.)," the agency said.
The general director of the operator of gas transportation systems of Ukraine, Dmytro Lippa, noted that the increase in tariffs was a forced measure. He stressed that in 2024, 85% of the income was derived from the transportation of Russian gas and only 15% remained from domestic customers, Gazeta.Ru added.
In late August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired in May) said that the country would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin later said that Russia was not giving up gas transit through Ukraine. According to the head of state, Gazprom plans to fulfill all its obligations under long-term contracts.
Later on Dec. 20, Zelensky was quoted by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo as saying he agreed to transit Russian gas through Ukraine if Western countries would not pay Russia for the fuel until the conflict ended. Fitzo called this condition absurd, because no one will supply gas for free, and Kiev thus completely excludes the possibility of transit.
After that, on December 28, Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko appealed to the EU over Fitzo's threats to stop supplying electricity. He said that Ukraine was ready to replace Slovak electricity with supplies from other neighbors. According to him, negotiations with partners have already been held.
