On 30 December, the Russian Defence Ministry published footage of Russian servicemen returning from Ukrainian captivity.

The footage showed the servicemen expressing their gratitude and wishing them a Happy New Year.

The Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatyana Moskalkova in her Telegram-channel in turn said that she personally talked to the Russian military, noting their courage and resilience.

"We thank the Russian Defense Ministry, our special services for the great work done on the exchange," she added in her message.

Earlier in the day, Russia returned 150 military personnel from Ukrainian captivity as part of the exchange with Kiev. It was specified that the United Arab Emirates acted as an intermediary in the return of Russian servicemen from captivity.

Before that, on December 20, Moskalkova and her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets discussed the lists of prisoners of war and missing persons. The meeting also addressed the issues of further humanitarian cooperation to assist civilians.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
